The Story
Montepulciano, a noble grape native to central and eastern Italy, particularly in the regions of Abruzzo and Marche, has found an extraordinary second home in the soils of Texas. Unlike its more famous Italian counterparts, Montepulciano is a late-ripening variety with tremendous aging potential—characteristics that make it perfectly suited to the extended growing season of the Texas High Plains.
What distinguishes Duchman's Montepulciano is the harmonious dialogue between this Italian variety and Texas's unique growing conditions, further enhanced by winemaker Dave Reilly's commitment to time-honored aging practices. Cultivated on the High Plains at elevations around 3,100 feet, the grapes develop complex flavors while maintaining crucial acidity in the region's continental climate and sandy loam soils.
Reilly's signature extended aging program allows this wine to mature for 4-5 years in a combination of French and American oak barrels, with only about 10% new oak to preserve the grape's innate character. This patient approach transforms Montepulciano's naturally robust tannins and deep color into a wine of remarkable complexity and elegance. After barrel aging, the wine rests in bottle for at least another 12 months before release, ensuring each vintage achieves its full potential.
