The Story

This Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County and specifically the Santa Rita Hills. The Sta. Rita Hills AVA is renowned for its unique terroir that produces exceptional cool-climate wines. The climate is defined by the cool maritime influence from the Pacific Ocean, with coastal fog and strong winds (temperatures during ripening months are nearly 15 degrees lower than areas to the west), leading to an extended growing season to allow for full phenolic ripeness. Vineyards are oriented east-west (rare for California), bounded by Purisima Hills to the north and Santa Rosa Hills to the south. Soils are predominantly loamy, with sand, silt, clay, and marine deposits contributing to the wines' saline character.

About Violet

Producer Story

Violet Hill's mission is to bring terroir-driven and complex wines at everyday prices with a focus on cool-climate varietals (like Pinot Noir) from single-appellation sourcing on the West Coast. An outstanding opportunity to source grapes from the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon led to our newest project, Violet Hill. Unfortunately, the strict AVA regulations in Willamette Valley meant we could not use this as a blending component for the Averaen blend, but the fruit was too good to pass up. A similar opportunity arose in Santa Barbara County just months later - the wine was outside the Sonoma County AVA specs for Valravn and a bit too pricey for Pavette. Hence, a new project - Violet Hill.
