Winemaking The grapes were hand-harvested and transported to the winery where some juice was drained in order to concentrate the must. A seven-day cold maceration followed to help develop primary fruit aromas. Fermentation lasted five days at medium temperatures with regular pumpovers. The wine then underwent a 15-day post-ferment maceration period to further refine the tannins. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. The wines where aged for 12 months before bottling.

The Character
Tasting Notes This wine is deep red, almost black in color. Fresh and lush aromas of black plums, cassis, raspberry, figs and sweet leather with hints of spice, violets and soft vanilla from new oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and firm with carefully weighted tannins that become more defined as the wine lingers in the mouth, with dense savory characters leading towards a rounded, supple, blackberry, mocha and plum finish that displays great restraint and poise. It is a delicious and pleasing wine with a firm satisfying freshness, forward in style with fine soft tannins.
The Story
After an unusually mild winter and heavy rains in early March, mixed
conditions followed in April/May, which led to an intense summer drought with heat
spikes and more rain at the end of harvest. Flowering started about 2 weeks early.
Fruit set looked healthy, although the threat of mildew remained throughout June.
Late June heralded warm temperatures and the driest summer since 1959. Serious heat spikes in early September caused some yield losses. Harvest started on 14th September with Merlot. Weather changed (torrential rain and high winds), so the crew waited until 30th September to pick Cabernet Sauvignon/ Franc. Overall, the quality of the fruit was extremely high, and the wines appear to be close in style to the 2016
vintage, but perhaps with a little more concentration, complexity and elegance.
