Bodegas F. Rubio

Founded in 2003 by Francisco Rubio, this estate is a model for what the best family-owned boutique operations aspire to be. All wines are made from organically farmed, estate grown fruit that is picked by hand and vinified with the intention of revealing true expression of the estate’s terroir. Located on the gently sloping northern face of Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California’s viticultural northern area, the winery’s easy access to fresh water and soils of clay and decomposed sandstone combine to provide the winery with a truly privileged location. Located 11 miles from the Pacific at an elevation of 1,150 ft on a site that faces southwest, the area under vine is 10 acres, and the grapes grown include: Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Malbec, Montepulciano, Chenin Blanc, and Palomino.
True to the definition of a family-run operation, 3 generations are currently employed in tasks as diverse as winemaker, agronomist and onsite chef, while the elephant that appears on each label signifies, at once, the concept of a tightly knit family group that sticks together, and an individual member of the family to whom each wine is dedicated.
With a focus on terroir driven wines, the foundation of their operation is sustainability, and it permeates their farming practices, their winery design, and the ethos they promote. In northern Baja, resources are limited and their sustainable orientation is a reflection of their commitment to not only making delicious site-expressive wines but doing it in a way that respects the land and adds value to the greater community.
From a crisp mineral driven white and a Provençale-styled light rosé, to elegantly layered reds with plenty of structure for aging, the estate makes 6 wines and has a total production that averages around 4,000 cases annually.
