Denis Et Didier Berthollier
The winery has been run since the mid-1990s by two brothers, Denis & Didier Berthollier, who come from a long winemaking tradition of growers, owners, and winemakers dating back to 1850. Denis & Didier own several parcels on the southernmost and steepest parts of the Savoie hills. Their forefathers abandoned these abrupt slopes at the beginning of the 20th century because they were too difficult to work. Denis & Didier harvest, vinify, and do the bottling themselves at their domaine. They have eliminated the use of insecticides & fungicides in all their vines and ceased the use of weedkiller since 2008, enabling grass to grow in the rocky vineyards. They use only naturally occurring, indigenous yeasts and very minimal SO2. Their wines are recognized among the purest & finest in Savoie.
Biography
DENIS BERTHOLLIER
Denis displayed a passion for viticulture from a young age, often found exploring the hillsides among the vines. His dedication to winemaking led him to study at an agricultural college in Beaune, Burgundy, where he earned a diploma in viticulture and oenology. In 1995, Denis joined the family estate, stepping into the shoes of his retired father and working alongside his uncle. Over the years, he has been instrumental in transforming the estate’s winemaking practices, focusing on organic and biodynamic farming to highlight the unique characteristics of their terroir.
DIDIER BERTHOLLIER
Didier, the eldest brother, has always had an adventurous spirit and a desire to explore the world. After earning a diploma in Technology, he ventured to Africa, where he spent a decade supplying water to villages in the Sahel. In 1997, when their uncle left the family estate, Didier returned home to assist his brother Denis. Together, they revitalized the ageing estate and its suffering vines, transitioning to organic and biodynamic farming. Didier primarily focused on the vineyards, working alongside Denis to showcase the estate’s rich terroir through their rejuvenated vines
and sustainable practices.
