There is a love story at the heart of Secret Door. When Donald Patz — the winemaker behind nearly three decades of celebrated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at Patz & Hall — met Jung Min Lee, she was honest with him from the start. His wines were lovely, she said, but her true preference was Bordeaux. She had developed her palate living in Virginia, where access to the great wines of the Médoc came more easily than tracking down the latest California sensation. Cabernet Sauvignon was her language.
Donald asked Jung Min to move across the country to be with him in Napa Valley. She agreed — and he made her a promise in return. Someday, he would make her a Cabernet Sauvignon worthy of her palate. Secret Door is that promise kept. Founded together by Donald and Jung Min, the winery is named with the quiet sense that something rare and personal lies behind it — an entrance into a world most people only glimpse from the outside. Every bottle carries that origin story: a winemaker stepping outside his comfort zone, not out of restlessness alone, but out of love.
Philosophy
After nearly thirty years of building his reputation on Burgundian varieties, Donald Patz approached Cabernet Sauvignon with fresh eyes and deliberate intention. He calls his style "neoclassic" — a word that captures both his respect for Napa's tradition and his resistance to its excesses. Where the valley spent decades chasing maximum ripeness and extraction, Secret Door steps back. Grapes are picked slightly earlier, preserving freshness and structure. The wines are aged in 100% new French oak, but the goal is integration, not imposition — oak used as a frame, not a flavor.
Sourcing is done with the same care. Secret Door does not own vineyards; instead, Patz works closely with select Napa Valley growers, following precise farming protocols and building the kind of long-term relationships he honed over decades at Patz & Hall. The result is Cabernet Sauvignon that aims for harmony above all — wines with the depth and seriousness that Napa can deliver at its best, balanced by the kind of elegance that makes you want to open another bottle rather than simply admire the one in your hand.
