Serafica

On the southern slopes of Mount Etna, where black volcanic soil meets centuries of tradition, Serafica Wines tells a story that begins with the land itself. What started in the 1950s with Andrea Serafica—who returned from America to cultivate vineyards in Nicolosi—has evolved into a multi-generational pursuit of purity, place, and purpose. Today, Serafica is not only producing wines but capturing the spirit of Etna in every bottle.
The family has worked this land for decades, adapting and innovating with each passing generation. Nino Serafica built the first oil mill in the 1970s, a move that expanded the family’s agricultural reach. In the 2000s, his children, Giuseppe and Maria Ausilia, stepped in to modernize the estate, replanting vineyards, expanding groves, and bringing in cutting-edge equipment—all while deepening their commitment to sustainability and tradition.
The volcanic soils and steep, sun-drenched slopes of Etna shape everything Serafica produces. Their vineyards rise up to nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, where relic grape varieties like Carricante, Minnella, and Nerello Cappuccio thrive in sandy soils and dramatic day-night temperature swings. This unique terroir gives rise to wines that are intensely mineral, vibrant, and expressive—true reflections of the mountain.
With the arrival of oenologist Nicola Colombo in 2022, the winery entered a new chapter, one that honors tradition while embracing experimentation. Under his guidance, Serafica introduced its first sparkling wines—elegant expressions of Catarratto and Nerello Cappuccio—and launched its Versante Sud line, featuring a limited macerated white and an Etna Bianco crafted from ancient bush vines on Etna’s steepest slopes.
But Serafica is more than a winery. It’s a model for circular, sustainable agriculture in Sicily. From repurposing pomace for energy to cultivating heirloom rye varieties in partnership with local institutions, the estate is deeply embedded in the ecology and economy of its home.
Each bottle from Serafica carries the signature of this place and the people who steward it—wines born of lava, air, and intention. With every vintage, the family continues its quiet mission: to let Etna speak, and to listen well.
