The Story

Unlike other Sicilian varieties, Grillo is not an ancient grape: It was created in 1873 by agronomist Antonio Mendola by crossing two traditional native grapes: Catarratto and Zibibbo. Almost exclusively planted in the Marsala area and historically is of particular importance in the production of Marsala wine. 'Agramante' is named for the king of Africa and fiercest opponent of Charlemagne in the "Orlando Furioso" epic. The label depicts Orlando at Charlemagne's court, protecting Paris from siege.
