The Character

Tasting Notes Medium ruby hue. Fragrant, layered nose of blueberry, black cherry, cranberry, plus a hint of vanilla and coconut. The palate makes good on its promises, exhibiting masses of astutely defined black plum, cassis and black cherry allied to judicious oak notes in cedar, vanilla and coconut. This has the acidity and structure to go the distance.

The Story

Winter was cool and dry. February started well with an early budburst; vine growth stalled as temperatures dropped in March. Frost damage was avoided in early April when anti-frost machines and were used and candles were lit. Flowering and fruit set were successful, but then it turned humid as highs brushed 40ºC and led to violent regional hailstorms on June 20th, which fortunately did not touch St Emilion. July and August were warm, however, with higher levels of clay in the soils and better water retention there was very little stress in the vines and no rush to harvest. The first Merlot was picked on September 19th and harvest was completed by the 23rd. The overall quality of the fruit was outstanding.
