The Character

Tasting Notes This is resolutely old school, with ample appeal for those chasing full-fruited shiraz supported by a bold tannic framework. However, though there’s a little warmth here, this is no bigger-is-better wine. There’s dark brambly fruits, dried olive, plum and an earthy, ferrous mineral overlay. The tannins are dusty and rugged but not overwhelming, and the mid-palate happily avoids pooling rich fruits. The connection between fruit and structure has not yet synched, so a few years of rest will do this a favor.

The Story

Dead Arm is a vine disease caused by the fungus Eutypa Lata; the result is that one half, or an ‘arm’ of the vine becomes reduced to dead wood, and vineyards that are severely pruned or replanted. The remaining live vine, while low yielding, will produce clusters of amazing intensity. This is a wine of history and provenance, utilizing selected parcels of premium fruit from across d’Arenberg’s top vineyards, some over a century old, to artfully create this stunning Shiraz.

About D Arenberg

Producer Story

d’Arenberg is one of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and other Rhone varieties that have historically defined the region. A century on, their vineyards have grown to some 450 acres in McLaren Vale, including Shiraz dating back to d’Arenberg’s first plantings in 1912, and nearly one-third of McLaren Vale’s old bush-vine Grenache. Fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family’s vineyards to organics and biodynamics and moved to solar energy in the winery. All the while, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed—all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches.
