Winemaking Fruit was sourced from old Shiraz vineyards in the Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer, Moppa, and Eden Valley regions comprising 85% Barossa Valley, 15% Eden Valley fruit. Each parcel was fermented separately in small stainless steel fermenters, some with submerged caps and twice daily pump overs. Post ferment, the component wines were matured in oak for 15 months, with 28% in new, fine-grain French oak hogsheads and the balance in older French hogsheads and puncheons.

The Character

Tasting Notes The bouquet features lifted notes of dark berries , black plum supported by hints of anise and clove. On the palate, excellent concentration of rich red fruits with hints of dark chocolate and earth finishing long with silky tannins. We intend for the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and fruit depth to allow cellaring for at least 15 years.

The Story

100% Shiraz from old-vine sources in the Stockwell, Light Pass, Krondorf and Marananga sub-regions of Barossa Valley. The aim is to craft a wine true to its origin, variety and the vagaries of vintage. Great fruit intensity and fine tannin structure, with predominantly French oak chosen to complement the ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit. Impressive aging potential.

About John Duval

Producer Story

John Duval is one of Australia’s most highly regarded winemakers. Raised on a South Australian farm with three generations of grape growers before him, his vinous path was fated. However, it was during his 28 year tenure with Penfolds that his passion for the famed Barossa Valley flourished. As Chief Winemaker and custodian of Australia’s most famous wine, Grange, he was instrumental in establishing Penfolds as one of the world’s great wineries. In 2003, John embarked on his own label, John Duval Wines, inspired by the best of the Barossa Valley’s low-yielding, old vine vineyards. Now, along with his son Tim and his signature touch, they craft intense wines as complex and distinctive as the diverse terroir of his treasured Barossa Valley.
