Winemaking Our Pinot Noir is hand-picked, de-stemmed, unfined and unfiltered. Sees a five day cold soak with one hundred percent native fermentation. Clones in Larry Hyde Pinot Noir are Calera, Oregon, One Vine, Dijon 115 & Dijon 114, and Pommard. Fermented in open top tanks. Harvested on August 27th, 2020 and aged 14 months in 25% New French Oak and 75% Neutral Oak Barrels. Bottled on November 21st, 2021.

The Story

Pinot Noir was the first wine ever produced by Hyde. It was made for the first time in 2009 and released in 2013. Our wines tell the tale of time and the oldest Pinot Noir we are still enjoying is a 2010 vintage.

This vintage, the season began as one of the coldest we have seen with 22 nights of below-freezing weather between February and May 2020, causing some damage to the new buds. Soils remained dry from drought and lack of rain. The majority of our spring rain came in mid-May, when the clusters were flowering, and caused some shatter, reducing the crop size. The remaining growing season was mild, and the weather was ideal. With harvest on the horizon, we experienced multiple days of severe heat, with temperatures in Carneros reaching well over 100 degrees and causing major crop loss. Hyde Vineyards was not impacted by the fires and the crop was all harvested prior to their occurrence. This vintage was challenging from multiple angles, but the resulting wines show great concentration and are reminiscent of the 2015 and 2017 vintages.

After nearly 30 years of providing an extraordinary quality of grapes to clients exclusively, Larry debuted his own small-lot Pinot Noir wine project and officially opened the doors to his estate winery shortly after. Today, Hyde Vineyards continues to work with over 35 wine brands providing exceptional fruit while Hyde Vineyards Estate produces small-lot estate-grown wines.

Larry is a pioneer in a region that became California’s second AVA, Los Carneros, Napa Valley.
