Aromas Intense complex nose of chocolate, tobacco, smoke and cloves

Mouthfeel Elegant, refined, medium-bodied palate, pure sweet tannins

Tasting Notes There is a lactic note on the nose, with hints of goat cheese and smoke that don’t dominate. Olives, currants and black cherries as well. Structured and quite chewy on the palate, with a medium to full body at the end. / Cinnamon and blackberry juice aromas lead to a wine that is still young and structured. It has a succulent character, black currant and spice flavors from wood aging.

The Story

This château of 50 acres is the last surviving estate within the Bordeaux city limits and is owned by Paulin and Isabelle Calvet, whose families have been in the wine business for six generations. Under the guidance of famous oenologist Valérie Lavigne, the wine produced at Picque Caillou has seen a remarkable evolution in complexity and style. Sand and gravel soils. High-density plantings of 4,050 vines per acre. Manual harvest. Aged 14 months in French oak barrels.

More recently, the estate was acquired by Laurent Marti, president of Union Bordeaux Bègles (UBB), opening a new chapter for the château, alongside the appointment of Peggy Plouhinec as the new Commercial Director.

Producer Story

Château Picque Caillou was built in 1780 in what was then the countryside outside of Bordeaux, but has now become part of the expanding city of Bordeaux. The illustrious Château Haut-Brion is just a few hundred meters away (about a 15-minute walk). In fact, it is one of the few estates, along with its neighbors Haut-Brion and Pape Clément, that have resisted urban development and preserved their exceptional terroir to produce remarkable wines. The Pessac-Léognan appellation, created in 1987, is reserved for some of the most prestigious estates in the renowned Graves region.
More recently, the estate was acquired by Laurent Marti, president of Union Bordeaux Bègles (UBB), marking a new chapter in its history, alongside the appointment of Peggy Plouhinec as the new Commercial Director.
