The Story

While legendary South Australian winemaker John Duval is globally renowned for his work with Barossa Shiraz, Compono (meaning "to put together" or "compose") represents his deliberate pursuit of elegant, structured Cabernet. The 2023 growing season was shaped by a cool, wet La Niña pattern, leading to one of the latest, slowest-ripening harvests in recent memory—ideal for preserving acidity and varietal definition. Sourced from two distinct high-quality sub-regions: 64% Eden Valley (from the historic Hutton Vale Farm vineyard, nestled near Henschke's famous sites) and 36% Barossa Valley (from the high-altitude, ironstone-rich soils of Moppa).

About John Duval

Producer Story

John Duval is one of Australia’s most highly regarded winemakers. Raised on a South Australian farm with three generations of grape growers before him, his vinous path was fated. However, it was during his 28 year tenure with Penfolds that his passion for the famed Barossa Valley flourished. As Chief Winemaker and custodian of Australia’s most famous wine, Grange, he was instrumental in establishing Penfolds as one of the world’s great wineries. In 2003, John embarked on his own label, John Duval Wines, inspired by the best of the Barossa Valley’s low-yielding, old vine vineyards. Now, along with his son Tim and his signature touch, they craft intense wines as complex and distinctive as the diverse terroir of his treasured Barossa Valley.
