The Story
Huilkrans is a singular expression of old-vine Chenin Blanc from the remote, rugged Skurfberg in Citrusdal Mountain. Planted between 1974 and 1989 on deep red sand over red clay, the vineyard sits in isolation at 450 meters above sea level—battered by drought, saved by patience. After a two-year hiatus due to near-total crop loss, the 2022 vintage marks a triumphant return, offering a wine that is powerful yet composed, laced with unmistakable Skurfberg minerality.
Often seen as the baritone to Magnetic North’s tenor, Huilkrans sings in a lower, richer register while maintaining the clarity and tension that define the region. Aged with care and minimal intervention, it is a profound, site-driven wine that reflects legacy, endurance, and the soulful depth of the Cape’s greatest Chenin terroir.
